Jana Carroll-Thomas relocated to Ohio a year ago after living in Michigan for 44 years, and she describes the move as a rewarding period of major life change. She brings a warm, approachable presence to her clinical work and encourages clients to step outside their comfort zones as part of growth.
She earned a Master of Social Work from Michigan State University in 2004, graduating with honors. Jana is licensed to practice as an independent clinical social worker in Ohio (LISW) and is also licensed as a social worker in Michigan, qualifications that support her clinical practice.
Her professional background includes 19 years in child welfare, working first as a caseworker and later as a supervisor, which has given her extensive experience with child abuse and the trauma that can follow. She currently serves as a supervisor at an agency that focuses on ensuring people living with HIV have access to the resources they need to thrive.
Jana has five years of experience providing therapy services and practiced individual counseling in Michigan for more than five years. Her specialties cover trauma and abuse, LGBTQ concerns, self-esteem, depression, stress and anxiety, relationship and family conflicts, intimacy-related issues, sleep disorders, anger management, and career difficulties.
She approaches clients with dignity, sensitivity, compassion, and respect, maintaining a nonjudgmental stance in both personal and professional interactions. Her counseling style is warm and interactive, with a strong emphasis on mindfulness.
Therapeutically, Jana blends cognitive theory - focusing on how thinking influences decision-making - with humanistic principles that support growth and self-actualization, and holistic techniques such as visualization, meditation, and guided imagery. She partners with clients to develop clear goals and a treatment plan that are tailored to each person’s needs and what works best for them.
Jana recognizes the courage it takes to seek a more fulfilling and happier life and aims to support and empower clients as they take those first steps. She looks forward to working with new clients and helping them move toward meaningful change.
Many people wonder whether online therapy really makes a difference. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person sessions.
One of the primary benefits of working online is flexibility - clients can connect in the way that suits them best, whether through video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging. This flexibility can make it easier to fit therapy into a busy schedule and maintain consistency.
All therapists offering online services are licensed professionals, and clients have the option to switch to a different therapist if they feel a different fit would be more helpful. Online therapy can be a practical, accessible option for many people seeking support for mental health and life challenges.
