Janna Fennell welcomes people who are ready to take a next step toward change and offers a direct, compassionate approach to therapy. Having participated in therapy herself, she understands that meaningful progress often requires honest self-reflection, patience, and work outside of sessions. She strives to create a nonjudgmental space while being straightforward and compassionate, and she prepares clients for the reality that therapy can sometimes feel uncomfortable or challenging.
Her clinical work focuses on a broad range of concerns including stress, anxiety, anger management, self-esteem, coping with life changes, relationship issues, family conflict, trauma and abuse, grief, sleep difficulties, career struggles, and depression. She blends a mind-body perspective with evidence-based methods, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and trauma-focused approaches alongside solution-focused and strengths-based techniques. She also incorporates practices such as progressive muscle relaxation, mindfulness meditation, breathwork, and attention to cultural factors when appropriate.
Janna’s style is collaborative yet direct: she asks thought-provoking questions, offers honest feedback, and provides practical tools to practice between sessions. She expects consistent attendance and engagement so she can understand what is happening in a person’s life and offer effective support. Janna emphasizes equipping people with skills they can continue to use after therapy, with CBT as a primary short-term approach to change unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns.
She is a licensed professional counselor with credentials in both Virginia and Minnesota - licensed in Virginia as an LPC (VA LPC 0701013160) and licensed in Minnesota as a professional clinical counselor (MN LPCC 2490). Janna holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Theater, and English from Dartmouth College and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Bethel University. She has more than eight years of experience, including extensive work as a school-based therapist serving PreK through 12th grade students and their families, as well as experience in private practice and online settings working with teens and young adults.
Janna is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), and Experiential Play Therapy. She is a certified yoga instructor (CYT-200) and is pursuing certification in Integrative Mental Health. She is also continuing to build experience in complex trauma (C-PTSD), crisis intervention, and work with self-harming thoughts. With empathy informed by personal temperament and a holistic toolkit, Janna aims to encourage and empower people who are motivated to do the work of change.
Many people wonder whether virtual sessions can produce real benefits. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or major life transitions, online therapy has been shown to be as effective as traditional in-person care.
One of the key advantages is convenience and flexibility - individuals can connect in the format that suits them best, whether that is video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or messaging. This flexibility makes it easier to fit therapy into busy schedules and to maintain continuity of care.
Licensed professionals provide online therapy, and if a different fit is desired the option to switch therapists is available. For many people, telehealth makes consistent, evidence-based support more accessible and easier to sustain over time.
