Dr. Mary Anne Gunter welcomes clients with a warm, client-centered approach rooted in eight years of clinical experience. She holds a doctoral degree and is licensed to practice as a professional counselor and as a marriage and family therapist, and she maintains professional counseling licensure in both Arizona and Arkansas. Her training includes specialty certifications in family trauma, child and adolescent trauma, and grief counseling, and she also provides bariatric counseling including pre-surgical assessment and perioperative support.
She is qualified to provide trauma-focused therapy for children, adolescents, and adults using evidence-based methods such as EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), the CPT variation for sexual assault (CPT-SA), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Her EMDR training was completed through an EMDRIA-recognized program, and her CPT and TF-CBT trainings were provided by UAMS ARBEST. She earned a state board specialization in trauma in Arkansas and was among the first clinicians in the state to be trained in CPT. In addition, she holds a Clinical Fellow designation from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and is recognized as a Smart Stepfamilies therapy provider.
Dr. Gunter works with relationship issues, family conflict, trauma and abuse, grief and loss, parenting concerns, stress and anxiety, intimacy-related issues, anger management, self-esteem struggles, career difficulties, coping with life changes, coaching, compassion fatigue, and ADHD. She has experience supporting blended families and coparenting arrangements and is a trained facilitator of the One Heart, Two Homes coparenting course, a program accepted by many family court systems.
She asks prospective clients to coordinate appointment requests directly with her rather than relying on the automated scheduling tool, as direct contact ensures the most accurate availability. Appointments are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis and are not held open. Dr. Gunter’s practice on this profile serves individual adult clients and she prefers not to treat couples on that platform.
Dr. Gunter does not provide treatment for bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, addictions, autism spectrum conditions, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, sexual disorders, serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, or active suicidal or homicidal ideation or current or past attempts. She does not treat minors who cannot independently consent. If a client reports suicidal thoughts or intent, she will advise immediate emergency care such as calling 911 or 988 and can assist in locating local resources when appropriate.
She is licensed to treat clients who are residents of, and are physically located in, Arkansas, Arizona, or Florida. Dr. Gunter approaches therapy collaboratively, respecting that clients often know themselves best, and she works with individuals to set realistic goals and develop practical plans to reach them.
